Ottomans took this land about 1400, but by 1696, it was under Venetian hands. British took the charge of protection of this land in 1815, along with the Ionian Islands. It achieved later a declaration as an independent republic.

On October 30, 1914, Italy conquered it and appointed a military commander on the island known as Saseno. The secret Treaty of London on April 26, 1915, reaffirmed it.

Albania ceded this scenic land to Italy on September 2, 1920. It was part of the Albano-Italian agreement following World War I.

From 1920 until 1945, this scenic island was part of Lagosta, in the province of Zara, and was a part of Italy.

The Italian authorities constructed a lighthouse and some naval defenses on this land. They also relocated a few families of fishermen from Apulia to this island of the Adriatic Sea.

The land was united with the Italian Governorate of Dalmatia in 1941 during World War II. Italy ceded this scenic island to Albania on 10 February 1947, under the postwar peace treaty with Italy.
