To get to Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, you need a 4WD taxi or car rental. There’s no public transportation. The park village, Abaca, manages hiking trails and a visitors center.
It takes just over an hour to drive from Nadi. The drive includes a 10-kilometer dirt/gravel track and a creek crossing. In the wet season, the creek may be impassable.
To find directions, search “abaca” in Google Maps. It will take you north along the Queens Highway, past Lautoka, and into the mountains.
When visitors try to find a taxi, they may need 180FJD one way or 200FJD round trip. Since many want to stay overnight, they prefer to hire a car.
People usually visit the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and the Sabeto Hot Springs on the way to Nadi. The entrance fee to the national park was 25FJD each.
Visitors pay this at the hut located in Abaca. The authority may charge a further 35FJD each to stay in the hut overnight, a total of 60FJD per person.
There is a hut perfect for hikers. The top of Mount Batilamu is its location, and it is only a 5-minute walk from the viewpoint at the end of the hike.
It does not have electricity, but the authority at the center may give a light to use. It contains a few rainwater tanks, which may have water during your trip.
Getting the tanks to work was a bit tricky. Inside the hut are a series of mattresses with bedding for about a dozen people.
There are basic cooking utensils and a gas bottle with an old stove. The stove is quite old, but the ignition switch may work.
There is a drop toilet around 2 minutes walk from the hut. There are no showers available in this place. You can use the rainwater for a sponge bath or shower.
So staying should not be a problem as plenty of space is available in the hut. There is also accommodation available in the village of Abaca if you get caught out.
AllTrails lists it as a 6.9km round trip with 800m elevation. It took 3 hours to ascend and 2 hours to descend. The directions at the visitor’s center are vague, especially for the starting point.
There are two options here. First, download the AllTrails app and follow the hike for Mount Batilamu listed there. The second option is to follow these instructions: Pay your fee at the hut.
Exit and turn right. Follow the road down to a stream. Cross the stream and continue to the cattle gate. Go through the cattle gate and turn left. From here, the trail is easy to follow.
The first half is through grassland. It provides unobstructed views of the island, but this place is hot and exposed. About halfway, you enter a jungle/rainforest.
The hike becomes steeper but more sheltered. When you reach the hiker’s hut, continue following the trail for another 5 minutes.
Its endpoint is a rock ledge facing south, with a bench and roped-off area. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat.
