The Cano Cristales River: An Astonishing River of Colombia

Cano Cristales is a mysterious river in nature. The seven colors of the rainbow with the touch of beautiful cotton are constantly drawing colorful waves on the chest of this river.

It is as if nature has decorated this river in its various forms. Many tourists from home and abroad flock every year to enjoy the beauty of this inaccessible river.

Let’s try to find out what is the secret behind the indescribable beauty of the diverse Cano Cristales River.

An Exceptional River

One of the most beautiful rivers in the world is Kano Crystals, where you can always see a mixture of seven colors of the rainbow. So many people call this river ‘River of Five Colors, and many people call it ‘The Liquid Rainbow’.

However, the official name of the river is ‘Cano Cristales’ or ‘Rio Cano Cristales’. If the river in Colombia were to be confused with the other five rivers, it would be a big mistake.

Locals say about this river, the river that originates from heaven or accidentally came to earth!

Cano Cristales is the only colored river in the world discovered so far. This river is full of wonders but not always so colorful. It takes this form at a particular time of the year.

At that time, along with the river, the surrounding nature also becomes colorful, playing with exuberance.

If you see the river full of biodiversity and the immense beauty of nature, it will seem as if the creator is sitting in a corner of the earth with his skillful hands decorating the river.

Geographical location

The Cano Cristales River meanders through a remote mountain pass in the Colombian state of Serena de la Macarena.

Located on the border of Colombia and Venezuela, this river is formed from the water of numerous flowing springs of the two countries. The river is about 100 kilometers long and 20 meters wide.

Although there are various aquatic plants, the biggest feature of the Kano Crystals River is the absence of any aquatic animals, fish or reptiles in the river.

Due to the low amount of sand particles, its water is quite clear, as if you can see your own reflection.

And that’s why each color of the river can be recognized separately. The hills surrounding the river form a safe habitat for various species of birds, amphibians, reptiles and other mammals.

Traveling on this river is not very easy as the access to the river is impassable. So far no accessible roads have been constructed to get close to the river.

Even so, all the adventurous explorers from different countries of the world reached there ignoring various obstacles to see the river.

They enjoy the heavenly beauty of Cano Cristales with their eyes full of heart and soul. Now, however, it is possible to reach the river by air or on horseback from the neighboring town of La Macarina.

When does the festival of colors start in the river?

During most of the year, the river’s normal state is maintained, and its behavior is similar to that of the other five flowing rivers.

The gray bottom of the river, made of hard sedimentary rock, and the endlessly flowing stream of sparkling water do not seem to indicate much of a distinct feature of the river.

But the river regains its ferocity when the dry season ends and the monsoon season begins. Like all other rivers, this river regains its youth by receiving monsoon water.

And what doesn’t happen in other rivers happens in this river, its strange colorful winged fair butterflies play in the monsoon water.

The river plays magic from July to November. An explosion of color begins under the crystal waters of the river.

During this period, aquatic plants, mosses, corals, and various types of herbaceous plants in the river bottom grow rapidly by receiving monsoon water.

As a result, a wonderful combination of colors occurs in the river. Macarenia clavigera, an exotic shrub, grows rapidly in the river bed after receiving monsoon water.

These crimson bushy vines sway with the current of the river. In areas of the river where the current level is high, the red bush is most common. And that is why the color of the water of this river looks red.

At different times of the day in different parts of the river, depending on the variation in sunlight, the vegetation of Macarenia clavigera shrub can take on colors ranging from magenta, and bright red to deep purple.

Due to the black rocks, the blue color is prominent in some parts of the river. Also at the foot of the river, due to the green bushes and moss growing on the rocks, there is a fair of green color in many places.

And in the part of the river where sunlight does not reach, the blue color of the river is more pronounced due to the blue water and black rocks.

The yellow sand in the places below the river where the vine cannot grow, gives the river water a yellow color.

In this way, the red color of the river in some places, in a strange mixture of green, blue, and yellow in some places, creates a charming water stream.

The best time to see this colorful play of the Kano River is just a few weeks from September to November. When the water depth in the river is neither less than nor more than a certain level, this beauty of Cano is at its best.

Other Attractions Around The River

Kano Crystals River is not only attractive to tourists because of its varied colors. The nature surrounding the river is also a huge attraction for tourists.

In the hills surrounding the river, there are countless springs like Angusara, the Kano Kafri river surrounded by rocky mountains and lush greenery.

Here and there, you can go down to swim in the warm and cool water of the shallow water and see how many caves are spread behind the mountains!

It all draws the adventurous tourists here like a hypnosis. These indescribable beauties of nature have increased the aesthetics of this mysterious river a hundredfold.

Also surrounding the river are some 16 million hectares of mountains and plains, about one-fourth of Colombia’s total plains. This plain is known as Los Lalons.

It is the largest tropical green plain in the world. It is home to everything from birds of prey to giant snakes like anacondas.

The environment here has been developed as a habitat for various endangered species. Only 255 square kilometers of Los Lalons are open to tourists.

Special arrangements for adventurous tourists

The protected area here is opened for tourists from mid-May to December.

Since the declaration of the Cano Cristales River and the surrounding mountains as a protected national park, a large number of visitors flock to this region of Colombia every year to see the river and its surrounding nature.

But suddenly the political situation in Colombia became heated and the Colombian government kept the area off-limits to tourists for some time due to the fear of guerilla attacks.

After 2009 the area was again opened for tourists. However, not more than 200 tourists a day are allowed to visit the area to protect the area from climate and environmental degradation.

As a result, various tourism organizations have developed around the river. These organizations provide tourists with tours of the river and nature around the river.

There are special arrangements along the river for overnight stay of tourists. There is also good arrangement of picnic with everyone in the forest.

During the night, the nature along the river is like a heavenly play, so even on the days of Punirma, there are more crowds than on other days.

If you want to enjoy the incredible creativity and breathtaking beauty of nature, you must visit Kano Crystals at least once, otherwise, life will remain incomplete!
